Director, Engineering (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California

Annual base compensation: $220,000–$270,000, plus bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Own performance architecture for the clinical platform, including latency, throughput, scalability, benchmarking, profiling, and cost optimization.
• Design multi-region deployment architecture with data residency, sovereignty, failover, availability, and localization controls.
• Translate GDPR, FDA, HIPAA, and market-specific regulatory requirements into engineering controls.
• Manage and grow an offshore engineering team based in Eastern Europe across time zones.
• Establish distributed delivery practices, architecture standards, observability, SLOs, and risk mitigation plans.
• Mentor senior and staff engineers and communicate technical strategy to executive and cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• 15+ years of relevant industry experience, including principal-, staff-, or architect-level responsibility.
• Experience solving performance and scalability problems in large distributed systems through profiling, capacity modeling, load testing, and database optimization.
• Hands-on experience with multi-region systems, data residency, regional failover, and internationalization.
• Direct people management experience across time zones, including offshore, outsourced, or contractor teams.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, AWS, Python or Java, SQL and NoSQL databases, containers, DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, web security, GDPR, and FDA-regulated medical software.

Nice to have

• Experience launching healthcare or medical device products in new international markets.
• AWS multi-region infrastructure and Terraform or CloudFormation expertise.
• Experience with Datadog, OpenTelemetry, medical imaging, DICOM, or compute-intensive clinical workloads.
• Experience managing Eastern European teams or working with a systems integrator such as GlobalLogic.
• Fluency or working proficiency in a second language.
