Senior Protection and Control Engineer (High-Voltage Substations)

Location: Louisville, Colorado, United States; approximately 25% travel to project sites, vendor facilities, and commissioning locations.

Salary: $113,000–$141,525 per year, plus annual bonus.

What you will do

• Lead protection and control engineering for 35–500 kV substations across greenfield and brownfield renewable energy projects.
• Provide technical leadership through design development, engineering review, construction support, commissioning, energization, and post-energization operations.
• Review protection philosophies, relay settings, short-circuit, coordination, grounding, and EMT studies, along with related technical reports.
• Evaluate high- and medium-voltage equipment testing and provide technical feedback to EPC partners, utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
• Coordinate NERC PRC compliance activities and standardize protection and control practices, templates, and lessons learned.
• Support root-cause analysis, collaborate across project and operations teams, and mentor associate and peer engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis.
• At least 5 years of protection and control engineering experience for high-voltage substations or renewable generation facilities.
• Required experience with SEL protection and automation products, power system fundamentals, protection principles, relay coordination, and substation control schemes.
• Experience reviewing high-voltage equipment testing, commissioning documentation, electrical diagrams, DC schematics, and substation wiring diagrams.
• Familiarity with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and substation automation applications.
• Ability to lead technical discussions and manage priorities across multiple projects and stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related power systems discipline.
• Substation physical design, protection and control design, SCADA, controls architecture, or substation automation experience.
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing environments for protection relays and SCADA systems.
• Project management experience coordinating consultants, EPCs, and project stakeholders.
