Staff Engineer, Modelling and Simulation (R5700)

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of distributed real-time simulation systems across virtual, constructive, and live environments.
• Build and optimise high-performance C++ software for modelling, simulation, integration workflows, and system interoperability.
• Develop multi-agent, high-fidelity, and system-of-systems simulation environments for autonomy, perception, and systems engineering teams.
• Integrate defence simulation frameworks such as AFSIM and NGTS.
• Deploy containerised simulation environments with Docker and Kubernetes across development, CI, testing, and operational workflows.
• Provide technical and project leadership to teams of five or more contributors and connect simulation with autonomy algorithms, hardware interfaces, and automated test pipelines.

Requirements

• Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Extensive professional experience in software engineering and systems integration, including modern and legacy C++ standards and Python.
• Hands-on experience with real-time, distributed simulation systems or HWIL/SWIL environments.
• Experience with Docker or similar containerisation technologies and Linux development environments.
• Experience leading complex engineering or software projects and collaborating across software, autonomy, perception, test, and program functions.
• Ability to obtain an Australian NV1 security clearance and work on-site in Melbourne.

Nice to have

• Defence industry experience and experience with uncrewed systems, especially in the air domain.
• Experience with AFSIM, NGTS, or similar defence simulation environments.
• Experience with data processing, analysis pipelines, or Python-based test automation workflows.
