Staff Database Administrator (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid, with three days per week onsite in the Culver City or San Francisco office

What you will do

• Own the reliability, performance, availability, capacity, and cost of a multi-terabyte Aurora PostgreSQL estate supporting clearing, broker-dealer, and internal platform workloads.
• Lead multi-region disaster recovery, including Aurora Global Database adoption, replication monitoring, failover and failback procedures, and recurring recovery drills.
• Segment shared databases into domain-owned clusters and design partitioning, sharding, read-replica, aggregation, pooling, and load-testing strategies for significant growth.
• Own major-version upgrades, change data capture, and data movement using Debezium, Kafka/MSK, and AWS DMS.
• Establish schema-change governance, migration safeguards, security controls, and operational standards for regulated data systems.
• Serve as a senior escalation point for database incidents, build automation and AI-assisted tooling, and mentor engineers on data modeling and database operations.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience operating production relational databases at scale.
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise, including query optimization, indexing, partitioning, vacuum and bloat management, locking, concurrency, replication, and connection management.
• Hands-on experience with multi-terabyte Aurora or RDS environments, major-version upgrades, blue/green cutovers, and performance tuning.
• Experience designing multi-region disaster recovery and defining RTO and RPO targets, replication, failover, failback, backup, and restore processes.
• Experience with Debezium, Kafka, or AWS DMS, plus Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, and Flyway or Liquibase.
• Ability to work onsite three days per week in Culver City or San Francisco, with staff-level technical leadership and cross-team influence.

Nice to have

• AI and Claude best practices, including agentic automation for database operations.
• Experience with database decomposition, production sharding, MySQL, Snowflake, Redis, OpenSearch, Kafka/MSK operations, or large-scale data migrations.
• Knowledge of SOC 1, SOC 2, brokerage, clearing, custody, or regulated financial services environments.
