TL;DR

Principal Optical Engineer (Quantum Computing): Leading the design and implementation of complex optical systems for neutral atom quantum computers with an accent on high-numerical-aperture imaging and laser distribution networks. Focus on architecting optical assemblies, performing rigorous STOP analysis, and mentoring the engineering team to ensure design integrity from conception to productization.

Location: Must be based in or able to work on-site in Boulder, CO (4-5 days per week)

Salary: $160,000–$185,000

What you will do

  • Lead the design and specification of complex optical systems and subsystems from component to system level.
  • Collaborate with physicists to develop system architecture for neutral atom quantum computers.
  • Establish best practices for optical design, including critical reviews, tolerance analysis, and stray light modeling.
  • Define precision alignment procedures and provide oversight for hands-on assembly.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to technical documentation and grant proposals.
  • Manage design processes with external vendors and troubleshoot technical issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Sciences or Engineering required.
  • 10+ years of optical design experience and 7+ years of hands-on laboratory assembly experience.
  • Deep expertise in high-numerical-aperture imaging systems and complex laser distribution networks.
  • Proficiency with ray-tracing software (Zemax, FRED) and 3D CAD (Onshape, Solidworks).
  • Experience with structural-thermal-optical-performance (STOP) analysis.
  • Must be able to work on-site in Boulder, CO 4-5 days per week.

Nice to have

  • Experience with neutral atom quantum computing.
  • Professional experience in commercial product development and deployment to customer sites.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
