Field Underwriting Director - Middle Market Construction Insurance

Location: Remote within the United States; the position may be filled in any of the lower 48 states. Regular travel throughout the territory, including overnight trips, conferences, and leadership meetings, is required. Strong preference is given to candidates in CT, DC, DE, NJ, NY, NC, MA, MD, PA, or VA.

Salary: $152,000–$228,000 expected starting range; $152,000–$269,000 national range.

What you will do

• Lead Territory Managers and Field Underwriters within the Commercial Middle Market Construction Services organization.
• Manage construction insurance portfolios by analyzing performance, risk selection, renewal retention, pricing, and profitable growth opportunities.
• Direct underwriting standards, processing quality, workflow priorities, service delivery, and operational performance.
• Develop territory sales plans, grow new business, improve retention, and maintain relationships with agencies and brokers.
• Collaborate with Loss Control, Claims, Marketing, Technology, and other internal and external partners to resolve business needs.
• Coach, develop, evaluate, and manage direct and indirect reports, including hiring, training, performance management, and succession planning.

Requirements

• Prior commercial underwriting experience with underwriting authority is required.
• Ten years of commercial lines underwriting, sales, marketing, and agency management experience is preferred, including middle market experience.
• Significant people leadership and business management experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance operations, commercial lines products, rating, loss control, risk selection, and field underwriting practices.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred; CPCU or CIC designation is preferred.
• A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required; heavy travel and extended stays may be necessary. Employer-sponsored work authorization and STEM OPT participation are not available.
