TL;DR
Safety & Environmental Engineer (Manufacturing): Leading safety and environmental programs for a manufacturing operation with an accent on hazard assessment, regulatory compliance, emissions calculations, and environmental reporting. Focus on evaluating process and equipment changes, conducting audits, investigating incidents, and implementing practical corrective actions across plant operations.

Location: Cortland, New York, USA. Full-time onsite role with frequent work in manufacturing and operational areas. Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; domestic travel by land and air may be required, up to 15%.

Salary: $80,000–$95,000 annually, plus benefits.

What you will do

  • Partner with manufacturing and product teams to evaluate processes, equipment, raw materials, and products for safety and environmental impacts.
  • Lead safety and environmental programs and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct hazard assessments, emissions calculations, audits, inspections, testing, and environmental permit activities.
  • Analyze technical and process data to identify safety, environmental, sustainability, and compliance improvements.
  • Develop corrective actions, lead improvement initiatives, investigate incidents and injuries, and support return-to-work processes.
  • Provide EHS training and technical support to employees, contractors, suppliers, service providers, and regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 4 years of safety and/or environmental regulatory experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong engineering and analytical skills, including evaluation of chemical, physical, environmental, and process-related hazards.
  • Experience interpreting regulatory requirements and developing practical compliance solutions.
  • Ability to analyze technical data, develop corrective actions, and manage multiple projects independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, including pivot tables, lookup formulas, aggregate functions, and statistical analysis.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Title V Air Permitting, RCRA hazardous waste, sanitary water permits, Tier II, Toxic Release Inventory, TSCA, or cooling tower programs.
