Senior Software Engineer - Autonomy Core Frameworks (C++)

Location: Remote in the United States; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Fort Worth, Texas; or Blacksburg, Virginia

Salary: $160,800–$193,000 USD annually, plus bonus and stock options

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and evolution of core frameworks for state management, inter-component communication, abstraction layers, and shared utilities.
• Define technical direction for real-time C++ components supporting data flow, component coordination, error handling, and observability.
• Develop scalable architectural patterns and guide long-term platform design and technical tradeoffs.
• Collaborate with Behavior and Perception teams to maintain clean integration boundaries and coherent shared abstractions.
• Lead architecture, design, and code reviews; establish engineering standards; and mentor software engineers.
• Drive testing, simulation, validation, root-cause analysis, production readiness, and architectural improvements for reliability and performance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, a master’s degree with 6+ years of experience, or demonstrated ownership of complex production software platforms.
• Deep experience with C++17 and recent C++ standards, plus working knowledge of Python for scripting and system integration.
• Experience with autonomous systems, robotics, distributed systems, or complex embedded environments using middleware and publish-subscribe communication.
• Strong experience with testing, continuous integration, build systems, systems-level design, refactoring, and technical debt management.
• Expertise in modular and composable architecture, design patterns, concurrency, testing strategies, and long-term maintainability.
• Experience providing technical leadership through architecture reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and engineering standards.

Nice to have

• Experience with robotics middleware such as ROS 2.
• Expertise in consensus algorithms, state synchronization, event-driven architectures, deterministic replay, or other distributed-systems techniques.
• Familiarity with ISO 26262, SOTIF, ASPICE, or other safety-critical software standards.
• Experience with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Bazel, observability systems, simulation-based regression testing, or large-scale data-schema versioning.
