Claim Counsel (Design Professional Claims)

Location: Morristown, New Jersey, United States

Annual base salary: $111,600–$184,200, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Investigate, analyze, evaluate, and resolve design professional liability claims involving architects and engineers.
• Prepare management reports covering loss development, financial exposure, reserves, coverage issues, claim strategies, and recovery opportunities.
• Retain and manage outside counsel using litigation management plans and budgets.
• Develop coverage analyses and opinions, conduct legal research, and interpret policy language and case law.
• Negotiate settlements, review releases and settlement agreements, and attend mediations, conferences, trials, depositions, and field office visits.
• Advise underwriting and claim colleagues, support marketing and risk mitigation activities, and contribute to strategic initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate degree.
• Must be licensed, registered, or authorized and in good standing to practice law in the jurisdiction where the role is performed.
• At least two years of relevant legal experience; five or more years of relevant legal or claim handling experience is preferred for the role.
• Strong verbal and written communication, negotiation, decision-making, conflict resolution, and time management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, analyze data, articulate coverage determinations, and build collaborative relationships.
• Ability to travel occasionally and obtain and maintain required adjuster licenses.
