Catastrophe Field Claims Specialist (Insurance)

Location: Hybrid field role based in Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; or Minneapolis, Minnesota. Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM EST; occasional weekends, travel outside the assigned territory, and overnight stays may be required.

Salary: $70,000–$87,000 annually, plus potential company bonus and catastrophe-unit compensation.

What you will do

• Review and investigate complex catastrophe claims, including coverage, policy limits, exclusions, recovery potential, and applicable state law.
• Conduct on-site inspections, evaluate property damage, and prepare estimates using claims software.
• Contact insureds and other affected parties, explain claim expectations, and provide customer support throughout the process.
• Determine loss values, identify policyholder benefits, negotiate settlements, and approve payments.
• Document, code, and close claim files; create sub-claims and refer matters to underwriting, recovery, or special investigation units when needed.
• Monitor contractor repairs and support claim file reviews and training as assigned.

Requirements

• Completion of the ACG Claim Representative Training Program or equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a state adjuster’s license within 90 days where required.
• Valid state driver’s license and ability to travel to homes, repair facilities, and other field locations.
• Three years of experience or equivalent training in claims negotiation, evidence evaluation, estimating, subrogation, coverage questions, statements, and claim resolution planning.
• Knowledge of the Michigan Essential Insurance Act, Fair Trade Practices Act, subrogation, intercompany arbitration, simple litigation, and building repair techniques.
• Ability to work with claims systems, analyze information, communicate effectively, prioritize time-sensitive work, and safely operate a motor vehicle.

Nice to have

• Associate degree in business administration, insurance, claims, management, or a related field.
• CPCU coursework or designation, Insurance Institute of America General Insurance Program, or Xactware training.
• One to two years of full-cycle homeowners claims experience, including personal property, additional living expense, water loss, fire, or smoke claims.
• Ability to walk on roofs, climb ladders, and lift up to 25 pounds.
