TL;DR
Senior Structural Mechanical Engineer (Fusion Energy): Developing and analyzing structural designs for fusion energy systems including SPARC and ARC with an accent on computational structural mechanics, finite element analysis, and multidisciplinary engineering leadership. Focus on solving nonlinear material, fatigue, contact, and solver-convergence challenges, reviewing complex structural models, and mentoring engineers.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; hybrid workplace

Salary: $110,000–$185,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Serve as a domain expert in structural mechanics across SPARC, ARC, and other research and development projects.
  • Conduct and review structural analyses for system designs.
  • Solve complex engineering problems, provide recommendations, and offer technical leadership to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Mentor junior staff and mechanical engineers performing structural analysis.
  • Support the development and adoption of structural engineering best practices, workflows, and strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 7+ years of professional experience performing finite element analysis with multidisciplinary teams in a product development environment.
  • Strong knowledge of computational structural mechanics, including nonlinear materials, plasticity, fatigue, solver convergence, and contacts.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, accountability, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder-influence skills.
  • Willingness to travel and occasionally work nights, weekends, or on-call shifts.
  • Ability to work in a facility with industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.

Nice to have

  • Proficiency in ANSYS Workbench and SpaceClaim.
  • Experience with electromagnetic and thermal finite element analysis.
  • Ability to code in Python and APDL.
  • Experience pre- and post-processing large computational models.
  • Familiarity with structural design and analysis codes and standards such as ASME BPVC.
