Director Mechanical Engineering

Location: Toronto, Canada; hybrid with 3 to 4 days per week in the Toronto waterfront office

Salary: CAD 175,000–200,000 per year, plus variable compensation including short-term and long-term incentives.

What you will do

• Own and contribute to mechanical design and CAD work for complex product challenges.
• Set mechanical design and architecture direction while leading an experienced Mechanical Engineering team.
• Partner with Product, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, suppliers, and other stakeholders from prototype through mass production.
• Drive design verification, tolerance analysis, product validation, reliability, QA, and value analysis/value engineering activities.
• Select, qualify, and evaluate suppliers and manufacturing partners; travel for capability assessments and first article inspections.
• Manage department budgets, test equipment qualification, project schedules, issue tracking, and executive technical recommendations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of consumer or industrial product development experience and 5+ years of technical leadership experience.
• Hands-on CAD expertise and experience with electromechanical assemblies, mechanical design, and architecture.
• Experience with DFM, DFA, statistical tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, geometric tolerancing, and manufacturing process validation.
• Experience with injection molding, compression molding, sheet metal, stamping, MIM, soft goods, CNC machining, reliability testing, and product validation.
• Experience collaborating with Asian manufacturing facilities and external suppliers in high-volume mass production; a background check is required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes or automation.
• Knowledge of HVAC systems.
• Experience integrating Bluetooth, GPS, or Wi-Fi antennas into mechanical enclosures.
• Experience designing audio, optical, or camera systems, or performing thermal modeling and analysis.
• Ability to travel internationally approximately 4 to 5 weeks per year.
