Controls Engineer - Automation Specialist

Location: On-site in Auburn Hills, Michigan, United States. Approximately 30% travel within the US is required, with typical customer installations lasting 1–2 weeks.

What you will do

• Design electrical and pneumatic controls systems and documentation for automated assembly projects.
• Program PLCs and HMIs, including hirify.global, Allen-Bradley, and Siemens systems.
• Develop, test, debug, install, and commission automated cells and controls projects.
• Program and integrate robots and cobots into light assembly cells.
• Perform field checks, support installation technicians remotely, and assist with customer-site commissioning.
• Collaborate with project management, controls and mechanical engineering, design, production, sales, and proposal teams while managing project budgets and deadlines.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, computer, mechatronics, or a related engineering field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of relevant on-the-job experience may substitute for the degree.
• Experience developing PLC logic and HMIs from scratch using multiple controls architectures, including Rockwell and Siemens.
• Experience programming and integrating robots into light assembly cells.
• Ability to read electrical and pneumatic drawings and understand industrial communication protocols and machine safety standards.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
