Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote in Canada or the United States

Salary: $139,200–$235,200 USD per year for United States residents; base salary only, excluding bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and evolve moderate- to complex-scope backend capabilities.
• Choose appropriate architectures across modular monoliths, shared components, and independently operated services.
• Define standards for backend code quality, maintainability, testing, APIs, security, availability, and operational readiness.
• Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues, participate in incident response, and take technical ownership.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and design reviews.
• Integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows and promote responsible, high-judgment use.

Requirements

• Strong expertise in backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and a deep understanding of systems programming.
• Experience designing modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through technical judgment, influence, and clear written communication in an asynchronous environment.
• Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production, including loops, tool use, and error-handling strategies.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, or profiling.
• Hands-on experience with containerized production operations such as Kubernetes.
• Database performance expertise with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution, or partitioning.
• Experience with large-scale modular monoliths, event-driven systems, open-source maintenance, or developer-focused SaaS.
