Senior Software Engineer, Storage Infrastructure (Go/Python)

Location: Remote in Canada or the United States. If located near a Planet office, work from that office 3 days per week.

Salary: CAD 116,700–145,900 annually, plus potential short- and long-term incentives, bonus, and equity.

Planet designs, builds, and operates a large constellation of imaging satellites and a cloud-based platform that provides satellite data for commercial, environmental, and humanitarian applications.

What you will do

• Build and maintain systems that provide efficient access to growing datasets.
• Extend services for internal data search and image processing.
• Operate and tune Elasticsearch indexing for core datasets.
• Own service performance, monitoring, alerting, on-call support, and incident response.
• Contribute to the technical roadmap, architecture, design reviews, and technical decisions.
• Advise other engineers and lead project teams or assignments.

Requirements

• 6–8 years of software engineering experience.
• Production backend development and API experience with Go, Python, or similar modern languages.
• Experience operating highly scalable, cloud-native software and supporting highly available, consistently performant services.
• Experience with relational datastores such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and non-relational datastores such as BigTable or Elasticsearch.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude or Copilot in daily engineering work.
• Strong technical communication, distributed-systems analysis, remote collaboration, and mentoring skills.

Nice to have

• 6+ years of Go development for production backend services.
• 6+ years of Python development for customer-facing APIs.
• Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, or GCP.
• Experience working with geospatial data.
