Data Scientist, Expert

Location: Hybrid role based in Oakland, California, working from a remote office and an assigned location as required by business needs.

Salary: $140,000–$238,000 annually, plus eligibility for discretionary incentive compensation programs.

What you will do

• Research and apply advanced data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and operations research techniques to inform business decisions.
• Build data-mining architectures, statistical reporting methods, and analytical models using structured and unstructured data.
• Extract, transform, and load data from disparate sources for machine learning and feature engineering.
• Develop defensible, reproducible predictive and optimization models, including iterative algorithm development and model evaluation.
• Write and document reusable modular Python functions and assess the business implications of analytical methodologies and assumptions.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts, present findings to senior management, educate non-technical stakeholders, and peer-review complex models.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in data science, machine learning, computer science, physics, econometrics, economics, engineering, mathematics, applied sciences, statistics, or an equivalent field.
• Six years of experience in data science, or no experience with a relevant doctoral degree or higher.
• Advanced knowledge of mathematical and statistical foundations, machine learning algorithms, model evaluation, optimization, and feature engineering.
• Experience with programming languages, packages, and tools used to build data science and machine learning models and algorithms.
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts, including statistical inference, software engineering, and model deployment pipelines.
• Ability to communicate technical insights clearly and coach, teach, or mentor others.

Nice to have

• Doctorate in data science, machine learning, or a related discipline.
• Experience in the utility or energy industry.
• Participation in data science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning communities through publications, conferences, professional organizations, or open-source contributions.
• Knowledge of current industry trends and issues in data science or operations research.
