TL;DR
IC Validation Engineer Intern, MS - Summer 2027 (Silicon Photonics) (RF/Microwave, Analog Design, Python): Developing hardware and automated test systems for validating optoelectronic components, photonic integrated circuits, and high-speed optical communication systems with an accent on mmWave measurements, board-level hardware, and silicon photonics. Focus on designing validation platforms, automating measurements, troubleshooting chip and board designs, and testing low-noise, high-gain amplifiers.

Location: Santa Clara, California, United States; onsite work involving laboratory hardware validation.

Salary: $33–$66 per hour, plus potential bonus, equity, and additional compensation for intern PhD candidates.

What you will do

  • Develop chip-level and subsystem-level hardware for performance evaluation and validation.
  • Execute engineering validation plans for optoelectronic components, including transimpedance amplifiers and modulator drivers.
  • Design hardware platforms, probe solutions, test interfaces, and photonic integrated circuit test setups.
  • Write Python scripts to automate measurements and support testing with firmware.
  • Perform board-level and chip-level verification, troubleshooting, simulations, and laboratory measurements up to mmWave frequencies.
  • Collaborate on test development, validation databases, probes, probe cards, PCBs, and documentation of results.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master's degree program in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Expected graduation between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
  • Strong fundamentals in at least two or three areas including RF and microwave engineering, transistor-level analog design, communication theory, digital system engineering, programming, or silicon photonics.
  • Programming experience in Python or C; exposure to MATLAB or ADS is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience or interest in using VNAs, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and in-circuit emulators.
  • Applicants must be eligible to access technology and software subject to U.S. export control laws; an export license review may be required.
