TL;DR
Mechanical Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Aerospace) (CAD, Prototyping): Designing, analyzing, building, and testing flight hardware and fluid or structural components for aerospace systems with an accent on concept development, detailed drawings, qualification testing, and manufacturability. Focus on owning a scoped hardware project from concept through prototype and test, investigating root causes, and incorporating design-for-manufacturing feedback.

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, five days a week. Occasional travel to vendors or other hirify.global sites may be required. Applicants must be U.S. persons under ITAR requirements.

Company

hirify.global develops and manufactures critical avionics, hydraulic, and electrical components and subsystems for aerospace, military, and infrastructure platforms.

What you will do

  • Design and prototype mechanical hardware such as avionics components, valves, regulators, solenoids, actuators, and pistons.
  • Generate detailed drawings, component specifications, and supporting engineering analysis.
  • Build and test prototypes in the in-house R&D lab and support qualification planning and execution.
  • Investigate root causes in development, production, and testing, then help implement corrective actions.
  • Apply manufacturability feedback and work with build and test engineers to improve component designs.
  • Present the project and results to the engineering team at the end of the internship.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program in aerospace, manufacturing, materials, or mechanical engineering, or engineering physics.
  • Returning to school in Fall 2027, or graduating in Spring 2027 and interested in a full-time role.
  • Coursework in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, or solid mechanics, with a working understanding of engineering first principles.
  • Hands-on design, analysis, or build experience through coursework, student teams, personal projects, or a prior internship.
  • Must be a U.S. person under ITAR, including a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or protected person.
  • Must work on-site in El Segundo five days per week.

Nice to have

  • Experience building physical hardware through rocketry, Formula SAE, Baja, design-build-fly, or similar student projects.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and CAD tools such as Siemens NX or SolidWorks.
  • Exposure to finite element analysis and experience designing, building, testing, and troubleshooting mechanical systems.
  • Experience with pressurized components, test instrumentation, control components, machining, welding, or fabrication.
  • Strong collaboration, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with an interest in aerospace production and design.

Culture & Benefits

  • Dedicated mentor and daily access to engineers responsible for surrounding systems.
  • Hands-on ownership of a scoped hardware project from concept through prototype and test.
  • Work in an in-house R&D lab and see completed hardware on the bench during the internship.
  • Opportunity to contribute to flight hardware for aircraft and military platforms.
