Fastener Engineer - GM Defense (Automotive)

Location: Warren, Michigan, United States; hybrid attendance at the assigned location at least three times per week

What you will do

• Serve as the technical authority for mechanical fastening systems, standards, and design practices across vehicle programs.
• Develop enterprise fastening strategies, specifications, best practices, and standardization initiatives.
• Lead fastening architecture and design reviews for structural, safety-critical, and military applications.
• Provide technical guidance on fastener selection, torque strategies, joint design, coatings, corrosion prevention, fatigue performance, and validation.
• Partner with manufacturing, assembly, supplier quality, purchasing, and engineering teams to resolve development, launch, production, and field issues.
• Lead technical task forces, present recommendations to executive leadership, mentor engineers, and guide future automation, advanced joining, and digital engineering roadmaps.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of engineering experience with expertise in fastening systems, joint design, torque management, and mechanical assembly.
• Experience leading enterprise-level technical initiatives across multiple organizations and working with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of automotive product development and manufacturing processes, including complex technical risk management and resolution planning.
• Strong communication, presentation, problem-solving, and senior-level influencing skills.
• Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee. The role is subject to export control restrictions.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in engineering or an MBA.
• Expertise in automotive fastening standards and specifications.
• Experience with supplier sourcing, global supply chains, risk management, vehicle launches, and production readiness.
• Knowledge of military, aerospace, or high-reliability fastening applications.
• Lean Manufacturing, DFSS, Six Sigma, or equivalent certification.
