Location: On-site in Woodbury, Minnesota, United States, at least four days per week. Travel may include up to 10% domestic or international travel. Relocation assistance may be authorized. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employment visa sponsorship.
Salary: $124,127–$151,710 annual compensation, including base pay and variable incentive pay if eligible.

What you will do
- Develop optical inspection and metrology methods for optics-related parts and advanced product and process applications.
- Design, build, and validate benchtop inspection systems for detecting, characterizing, and quantifying defects and quality attributes.
- Apply optical engineering, imaging, and machine vision principles using transmitted and reflected light, bright field, dark field, polarization, and structured illumination.
- Create image acquisition, analysis, and data interpretation workflows to improve defect sensitivity, repeatability, and method capability.
- Partner with R&D, process and product development, quality, manufacturing, and equipment teams to define requirements and scale solutions into production.
- Design experiments, perform measurement systems analysis and method validation, document results, support equipment projects, and troubleshoot inspection and quality issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in science or engineering plus at least five years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in optical engineering, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or imaging science.
- Experience in optical inspection, optical metrology, machine vision, imaging systems, glass characterization, or related technical work.
- Knowledge of illumination design, lens and camera selection, resolution, contrast, polarization, depth of field, and signal-to-noise optimization.
- Experience with experimental design, data analysis, technical problem solving, method validation, and inspection of manufactured parts, materials, or optical systems.
- Experience with machine vision systems, industrial cameras, optics, lighting, image processing, and production inspection equipment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including clear technical documentation and communication with cross-functional teams.
Nice to have
- Ph.D. research focused on optical inspection, optical metrology, machine vision, imaging science, or a related field.
- Experience supporting capital equipment projects, vendor interactions, acceptance criteria, and equipment startup.
- Experience with Python, OpenCV, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Minitab, Zemax, or equivalent tools.
