TL;DR
Fiber Optic Specialist - Weekend - Second Shift (Fri, Sat, Sun) (Fiber Optics/Fusion Energy): Handling, routing, splicing, testing, and repairing thousands of optical fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine with an accent on attenuation measurement, mechanical integration, and fiber protection. Focus on performing precise optical measurements, building fiber assemblies for demanding environments, improving laser and fiber-handling safety, and supporting manufacturing and R&D operations.

Location: Devens, MA, United States; on-site. Work Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Occasional nights, weekends, on-call work, and travel may be required.

Salary: $38–$48 per hour plus a 30% shift differential, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

  • Handle, route, splice, test, and repair thousands of fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine.
  • Integrate fiber-related mechanical assemblies, including passthrough flanges and enclosures.
  • Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and their enclosures.
  • Measure attenuation, insertion loss, and spectral characteristics using optical measurement equipment.
  • Train technicians on fiber installation, splicing, routing, and measurement procedures.
  • Improve laser and fiber-optic safety protocols while supporting manufacturing and R&D needs.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience in fiber optics field applications.
  • Experience using OTDR, OSA, OBR, power meters, and similar equipment for optical measurements.
  • Hands-on fiber handling experience in a laboratory setting using established standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work extended periods standing, sitting, stooping, or typing.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, unusual positions, and on platforms approximately 25 feet high.
  • Ability to work safely around heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenic systems.

Nice to have

  • 7 or more years of fiber optics field application experience.
  • Experience with distributed sensing arrays, polyimide, coated fibers, and specialty fiber splicing.
  • Experience teaching fiber splicing techniques and cable assembly procedures.
  • Experience designing, building, and testing fiber cable assemblies for cryogenic or vacuum environments.
  • Knowledge of fiber coating removal and re-coating, proof-testing, optical sensing, multiplexers, switches, fault locators, and materials science.
