TL;DR
Fiber Optic Specialist - Third Shift (Fiber Optics/Manufacturing): Handling, routing, splicing, testing, and integrating thousands of optical fibers into the SPARC fusion machine with an accent on precision measurement, mechanical integration, and fiber protection. Focus on solving complex fiber installation challenges in confined, high-risk, cryogenic, vacuum, and limited-access environments while maintaining safety and equipment reliability.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States. On-site, third shift from 10:00 pm to 6:30 am. The role may require work on platforms around 25 feet high, in confined spaces, and occasional nights, weekends, or on-call coverage.

Salary: $38–$48 per hour plus a 15% shift differential, equity, and benefits.

Company

hirify.global Systems develops commercially viable fusion power plants and technologies for the transition to fusion energy.

What you will do

  • Handle, route, splice, test, and repair thousands of optical fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine.
  • Integrate fiber assemblies with mechanical components such as passthrough flanges and enclosures.
  • Install composite or polymer wrappings and minimize fiber damage and attenuation throughout the fiber lifecycle.
  • Perform equipment operation, preventative maintenance, continuous improvement, and fiber-related manufacturing and R&D work.
  • Train technicians on fiber installation, splicing, routing, measurement, and cable assembly procedures.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, technicians, and engineers while improving laser and fiber-handling safety protocols.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in fiber optics field applications.
  • Experience measuring attenuation, insertion loss, and spectral analysis using OTDR, OSA, OBR, power meters, and related equipment.
  • Hands-on fiber handling experience in a laboratory setting using established standards.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and perform extended periods of stooping, typing, standing, or sitting.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, unusual positions, elevated platforms, and environments involving heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Willingness to work on-site during the third shift and occasionally travel, work nights or weekends, or be on call.

Nice to have

  • 7+ years of experience in fiber optics field applications.
  • Experience with distributed sensing arrays, polyimide, and different coated fibers.
  • Experience teaching fiber splicing techniques and cable assembly procedures.
  • Experience designing, building, and testing fiber cable assemblies in cryogenic and vacuum conditions.
  • Experience with fiber coating removal and recoating, specialty fiber splicing, proof-testing, interrogators, optical multiplexers, optical switches, and fault locators.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time employment with equity and competitive compensation.
  • 13 company-wide holidays, flexible vacation days, and 10 sick days.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous parental leave and a 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Professional growth opportunities and team-building activities.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment guided by integrity, execution, impact, self-critique, and safety.
