Senior Climate & Soil Health Scientist (Biochar)

Location: Fully remote within the United States; travel up to 15% may include Washington, D.C., regional offices, and agricultural operations nationwide.

Salary: $90,000–$110,000 per year, with $100,000–$110,000 for candidates meeting the senior-level qualifications and $90,000–$99,000 for a junior hire.

What you will do

• Lead applied research, literature reviews, technical reviews, data analysis, modeling, life-cycle analysis, and impact-oriented program design focused on soil health and biochar.
• Translate research findings and producer innovations into decision-support tools, guides, publications, curricula, trainings, and other technical resources.
• Lead national and regional collaborations with producers, researchers, government agencies, nonprofits, corporations, and industry partners.
• Develop and deliver soil health, biochar, livestock, grazing, and peer-learning training programs for diverse agricultural audiences.
• Support impact measurement and evaluation systems assessing adoption, persistence, environmental outcomes, economic outcomes, and network performance.
• Support fundraising through proposal development, funder relationship building, and potential service as a future project principal investigator.

Requirements

• Significant scientific, technical, and applied on-farm expertise in soil health, soil function, agricultural production systems, and climate interactions.
• Advanced understanding of soil health implementation, biochar opportunities and challenges, environmental co-benefits, and adoption barriers.
• Experience with soil systems modeling, microbial and ecological processes, technical resources, and decision-support tools.
• Independent research experience and quantitative analysis of complex agronomic or ecological datasets using R, SAS, or a comparable statistical programming language.
• Successful experience in scientific leadership, partnership development, grant writing, fundraising, training, public speaking, and project delivery.
• Senior-level candidates need significant large-scale, multi-regional or national leadership experience; the senior qualification path requires a master’s degree and about 10 years of experience or a PhD and about 6 years.

Nice to have

• Experience with carbon sequestration or environmental services markets.
• Knowledge of NRCS and state and federal policies and programs related to agriculture, soil health, biochar, and climate resilience.
