Scientist IV (Earth System Science)

Location: In-person, hybrid, or fully remote within the United States; on-site and hybrid roles are based in Boulder, CO or College Park, MD. Hybrid staff work on-site approximately 3 days per week. Work outside U.S. territories is required.

Hiring range: $98,900–$128,600 per year.

What you will do

• Design and execute complex interdisciplinary scientific and technical investigations.
• Enhance and validate a coupled ocean and sea ice JEDI-based data assimilation system for GFS.
• Integrate marine observations, including direct Level 1b radiance assimilation and sea ice freeboard observations.
• Analyze model output and assimilation impacts to identify biases and improve forecast skill.
• Lead scientific project components, coordinate deliverables with internal and external collaborators, and support operational integration.
• Prepare publications, technical reports, datasets, proposals, and stakeholder presentations while mentoring less experienced staff.

Requirements

• Typically, a bachelor's degree with 10 years of related experience, a master's degree with 6 years, or a PhD in a scientific discipline with 2 years of related experience.
• Advanced knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and observational or modeling techniques.
• Advanced skills in scientific model or algorithm development and statistical, computational, or simulation-based data analysis.
• Ability to lead project components, coordinate collaborators, manage deliverables, and contribute to strategic planning and proposal development.
• Strong scientific communication, publication, presentation, mentorship, and collaboration skills.
• Federal screening and hirify.global background checks are required for selected candidates.

Nice to have

• Significant experience with atmospheric or oceanic numerical modeling.
• Advanced knowledge of coupled data assimilation methods.
• Proficiency with JEDI or a similar data assimilation framework.
• Advanced programming skills for scientific model development and data analysis.
• Experience coordinating with NWS/OMD and partner agencies for operational integration.
