Director, Senior Patent Counsel (Medical Devices)

Location: Hybrid in San Diego, California, United States

Annual base salary: $230,000–$344,975, with potential incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Provide strategic intellectual property counseling to R&D, product, marketing, and other business functions.
• Manage a global patent portfolio, including drafting and prosecuting applications with outside counsel.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate, patentability, and infringement analyses.
• Support global IP litigation, oppositions, enforcement, licensing, M&A, and collaboration transactions.
• Manage the global trademark portfolio, including clearance searches, submissions, and registration maintenance.
• Educate internal stakeholders on IP best practices and emerging technologies.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and admission to practice before the USPTO and at least one U.S. state.
• At least 6 years of patent law experience, preferably in a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department.
• Strong experience in IP litigation, patent drafting and prosecution, and negotiating IP agreements.
• Bachelor’s degree; a background in computer science, computer engineering, or another engineering discipline is preferred.
• Strong understanding of software patentability, AI/ML, digital health technologies, and open source software.
• Excellent communication, analytical, and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Experience as a patent examiner.
• Experience with medical devices, wearable technologies, or regulated healthcare products.
