IP Counsel (Life Sciences)

Location: Chaska, Minnesota, United States. The role is described as on-site, with eligibility for a remote work arrangement from the employee's home; travel is less than 5% within the US.

Annual salary: $160,000–$180,000, plus bonus or incentive pay.

What you will do

• Support IP portfolio strategy, patent filing decisions, and day-to-day patent prosecution with outside counsel.
• Conduct patent landscape, freedom-to-operate, third-party IP, and competitive intelligence analyses.
• Advise on IP provisions in NDAs, MTAs, collaboration, licensing, and vendor agreements.
• Develop and maintain processes protecting trade secrets, confidential information, proprietary know-how, and data.
• Partner with R&D, product, and business teams to assess IP risks and opportunities.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school and at least 4 years of life sciences patent law experience.
• Advanced degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related life sciences field.
• Active bar membership in good standing in at least one US jurisdiction and admission to practice before the USPTO.
• Substantial experience drafting patent applications and office action responses, including claim strategy and USPTO procedures.
• Experience managing patent portfolios, invention disclosures, filing strategies, and portfolio priorities.
• Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Nice to have

• Experience developing, enforcing, or advising on trade secret protection strategies.
• Experience supporting IP litigation or disputes, including claim charting, document holds, and coordination with outside counsel.
• Experience advising on IP-related contract provisions.
• Ability to provide strategic guidance on complex IP risks and opportunities.
