Salary: $261,000–$322,000 per year

What you will do

• Manage the global intellectual property portfolio for small-molecule product candidates, including patent preparation, prosecution, and lifecycle management.
• Partner with inventors, scientific leaders, cross-functional teams, and legal colleagues to identify patentable inventions and implement protection strategies.
• Assess patentability, infringement, validity, freedom to operate, and third-party patent positions, developing business-focused risk mitigation strategies.
• Conduct IP due diligence and support business development opportunities.
• Manage external counsel, global patent filings, collaborators, and licensors while ensuring compliance with applicable IP laws.
• Help build IP department infrastructure, policies, training, and competitive landscape analysis.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, preferably Organic Chemistry, or a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry.
• Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in good standing with the California Bar, or eligibility to qualify as California Registered In-House Counsel.
• Registration before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
• At least 7 years of pharmaceutical small-molecule IP experience, including patent preparation and prosecution, lifecycle management, legal opinions, and IP strategy; 2–3 years of in-house experience is preferred.
• Demonstrated success developing and implementing patent strategies that secure meaningful protection for products and related technologies.
• Ability to work onsite in South San Francisco four days per week; facility employees must be fully vaccinated, subject to applicable accommodations.
