Senior Patent Agent (Pharmaceutical Small Molecules)

Location: South San Francisco, United States; onsite four days per week

Salary: $198,000–$245,000 per year

What you will do

• Manage the global intellectual property portfolio, including preparation and prosecution of patent applications focused on small molecules.
• Collaborate with scientific and project teams to identify patentable inventions and implement IP protection strategies.
• Evaluate patentability, infringement, validity, and other complex risks, then develop business-oriented mitigation strategies.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate reviews, analyze third-party patent positions, and monitor competitive IP landscapes.
• Manage outside legal counsel and support compliance with global IP laws and regulations.
• Conduct IP diligence and provide intellectual property support for business development opportunities.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, preferably Organic Chemistry, or a master’s degree in Organic Chemistry.
• Registration before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
• At least 7 years of patent agent experience in pharmaceutical small molecules, including patent preparation and prosecution; 2–3 years of in-house experience is preferred.
• Proven success developing patent strategies and securing meaningful protection for products and related technology.
• Strong analytical, organizational, prioritization, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, interpret complex scientific and legal information, and use scientific and IP databases.
