TL;DR
Phd Student (d/f/m) in the Field of Materials & Processes (Cold Spray and Materials Science): Investigating cold gas spraying and metallic coatings through experimental characterization, mechanical testing, and physics-based modeling with an accent on microstructure, damage mechanisms, and structural integrity. Focus on multiscale analysis, cyclic loading, model development, and integrating research results into reliability and life-cycle assessments.

Location: Manching, Germany; onsite research role

Start: 01.10.2026 or as soon as possible. Duration: 36 months. Employment: full time, 35-hour week with flexitime.

What you will do

  • Conduct literature reviews on microstructure and damage behavior in additively manufactured metallic coatings and layers.
  • Fabricate and systematically vary coating systems under controlled cold spray process conditions.
  • Perform multiscale characterization using SEM/EBSD, micro-tomography, hardness mapping, and residual stress analysis.
  • Conduct static and cyclic mechanical testing and develop methods for specific research questions.
  • Identify local damage mechanisms, develop or apply physics-based models, and analyze damage evolution.
  • Integrate experimental results into life-cycle and reliability analyses and present findings in publications and conferences.

Requirements

  • Completed Master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering or natural science discipline.
  • Solid knowledge of materials, microstructure, and mechanical behavior.
  • Experience with experimental characterization methods and the ability to model complex physical phenomena.
  • Analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, self-motivation, and a structured, independent working style.
  • Willingness to plan and complete a multi-month research stay at a European partner institution if required.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Nice to have

  • Experience with numerical modeling approaches such as FEM.
  • Basic understanding of coating processes or additive manufacturing technologies.
