Senior Staff Engineer, Automation Controls (Industrial Automation)

Location: Alameda, California, United States; onsite

Base pay: $172,000–$218,000 per year, with additional benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses potentially included in the total rewards package.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, strategy, electrical design, and engineering standards for modular, deterministic, and scalable control systems.
• Architect HMI software and develop robust PLC code primarily in Structured Text under IEC 61131-3.
• Implement industrial fieldbus protocols including EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus, along with batch and safety standards.
• Design electrical schematics, power distribution, control panels, network architectures, and functional safety systems.
• Drive system integration, advanced troubleshooting, formal FAT/SAT validation, and technical documentation for software and hardware.
• Coordinate with vendors, scientists, engineers, and technicians while mentoring mid- and junior-level controls engineers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industry experience deploying mission-critical industrial automation systems and capital equipment.
• B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience with PLC programming, HMI software, industrial communication protocols, electrical design, and functional safety systems.
• Ability to work onsite while wearing required personal protective equipment and handling physical demands including moving items up to 50 lbs with lift equipment.

Nice to have

• Experience with complex materials processing involving extreme temperatures or pressures, challenging chemistry, or strict uptime requirements.
