TL;DR
Research and Development Scientist - Electronic Design/Modelling Engineer (Analogue, Mixed-Signal and RF Electronics): Designing and modelling next-generation recording-head architectures for future hard disk drives with an accent on high-frequency electrical performance, signal-to-noise ratio, and accurate simulation-to-measurement correlation. Focus on developing circuit and system-level models, analysing electrical and RF measurements, adapting layouts for product integration, and coordinating technical deliverables with external research and design partners.
Location: On-site in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Full-time, 39 hours per week. No travel required.
Company
develops and manufactures data-storage technologies, including recording heads for hard disk drives.
What you will do
- Design and optimize recording-head layouts to improve high-frequency electrical performance.
- Develop next-generation recording-head architectures and solutions that support increased areal density.
- Build and maintain circuit, behavioral, and system-level models, correlating simulations with electrical, RF, and system measurements.
- Assess technology improvements to writer and reader signal-to-noise ratio.
- Analyse component, fixture, and integrated-head measurements to separate intrinsic circuit performance from other effects.
- Collaborate with wafer-development teams and external research, design, foundry, and technology partners to align requirements, reviews, models, and deliverables.
Requirements
- Strong grounding in analogue, mixed-signal, or RF electronic design and modelling.
- Experience designing systems with amplifiers, high-speed interfaces, sensor electronics, or related circuit architectures.
- Experience with electronic design and simulation tools such as Cadence, Spectre, ADS, Synopsys, SPICE, MATLAB, COMSOL, or equivalent platforms.
- Experience developing models and correlating simulation results with measured data.
- Familiarity with semiconductor design flows, including schematic design, layout review, parasitic extraction, and process-voltage-temperature analysis.
- Strong communication, presentation, writing, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Nice to have
- PhD or postgraduate qualification in Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
- Experience in optoelectronics, photonics, or integrated-circuit design and modelling.
- Experience analysing experimental data with Python, MATLAB, SQL, or equivalent methods.
Culture & Benefits
- Flexible and inclusive workplace with employee-led resource and professional networks.
- Subsidized on-site cafe, on-site gym, exercise classes, and personal training.
- BUPA healthcare, company sick pay, medical leave, occupational healthcare, employee assistance, and group income protection.
- Annual leave, flexible working hours, enhanced maternity and paternity pay, and bereavement leave.
- Contributory pension, life assurance, employee stock purchase plan, bonus scheme, and workplace discounts.
- Training and development support, learning programmes, LinkedIn Learning, and degree or non-degree assistance.
Hiring process
- Submit a completed application through Seagate Careers by midnight on 1 October 2026.
- Demonstrate how the required criteria are met in the cover letter or CV.
