Inpatient Medical Coder (Healthcare)

What you will do

• Assign diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS.
• Sequence and abstract codes from inpatient medical records while ensuring documentation accuracy.
• Oversee and audit the work of Level 1 and Level 2 coders where applicable.
• Identify documentation improvement opportunities and resolve coding issues with relevant stakeholders.
• Maintain 95% coding accuracy, 95% MS-DRG assignment accuracy, and site-specific productivity benchmarks.
• Communicate with colleagues, management, and hospital staff about clinical and reimbursement issues.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of recent inpatient facility coding experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology and inpatient coding practices.
• CCS, RHIT, or RHIA certification is preferred.
• Employment sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Associate or bachelor's degree from an AHIMA-certified HIM or nursing program.
• AHIMA or AAPC certificate, preferably with CCS certification.
• At least 3 years of coding experience at a Level I Trauma Center, preferably in an academic medical facility.
• Experience with coding quality review feedback and computerized encoding and abstracting software.
