Systems Engineering Manager - Autonomy Behavior (Autonomous Vehicles): Leading the specification, evaluation, and evidence systems for autonomous vehicle behavior with an accent on requirements traceability, simulation validity, safety validation, and release readiness. Focus on building scalable evaluation systems, connecting scenario coverage to launch decisions, and resolving complex technical and safety questions across engineering, legal, product, and operations.

Location: Hybrid in Sunnyvale, California; in-office attendance is required at least three times per week or at another frequency set by the business.

Salary: $189,300–$290,000 annual base salary, plus potential incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Lead and develop a team of autonomy behavior systems engineers, setting standards for technical quality, execution, communication, and growth.
  • Set systems engineering and validation direction for major capabilities and cross-cutting behaviors.
  • Connect requirements, coverage, simulation validity, metrics, acceptance criteria, and release evidence.
  • Guide scalable behavior evaluation and simulation across synthetic tests, road data, and counterfactual references.
  • Coordinate scenario sourcing, orchestration, data quality, and reproducibility.
  • Partner with Engineering, Safety, Legal, Product, and Operations on engineering, release, and launch decisions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, robotics, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, autonomous vehicles, robotics, vehicle development, simulation, or safety-critical validation.
  • Experience evaluating autonomous vehicles for a commercial fleet, launch, supervised release, or another high-consequence product decision.
  • Strong systems engineering fundamentals, including architecture and decomposition, scene modeling, requirements strategy, interface definition, verification and validation planning, and traceability.
  • Experience leading simulation evaluation at scale and assessing coverage, confidence, runtime, cost, and simulation validity.
  • Strong Python, communication, stakeholder management, and technical leadership skills, plus experience as a technical lead or people manager.

Nice to have

  • Experience with human benchmarking, hazard analysis, safety cases, risk quantification, and risk acceptance.
  • Experience translating legal or regulatory expectations into compliance strategies with requirements, metrics, test coverage, and documented claims.
  • Experience designing validation lifecycles from scope definition and test generation through release decisions and continuous monitoring.
  • Experience hiring, organizing, and prioritizing technical teams through changing product and program needs.
