Lead Engineer, Evidence Management (Appian)

Location: Primarily hybrid; candidates must be within commuting distance of a Johnson & Johnson office in Raritan, New Jersey, or Limerick, Ireland. Limited remote consideration may be available for candidates with strong credentials and relevant experience.

Salary: $102,000–$175,950 annual base pay.

What you will do

• Own the application architecture strategy and engineering roadmap for the Evidence Management digital ecosystem.
• Lead Appian-based workflow, case management, process automation, integrations, records, reporting, and user experience capabilities.
• Translate Regulatory Affairs and Scientific Affairs processes into scalable application designs, data models, engineering patterns, and delivery backlogs.
• Define AI-enabled use cases involving Generative AI, Machine Learning, NLP, semantic search, knowledge graphs, and intelligent automation.
• Establish standards for APIs, event-driven integrations, workflow orchestration, data lineage, data quality, access control, and interoperability.
• Partner with Regulatory Affairs, Scientific Affairs, Quality, R&D, Supply Chain, Cybersecurity, Privacy, Data Governance, and IT teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, AI/ML, or a related field.
• At least 10 years of progressive experience in software engineering, application or solution architecture, platform architecture, data architecture, or enterprise technology delivery.
• Mandatory hands-on experience engineering, architecting, and delivering solutions on the Appian platform.
• Expertise in Appian process modeling, interfaces, records, integrations, data models, rules, reports, role-based security, lifecycle governance, and environment management.
• Experience delivering application engineering in Agile or SAFe environments and architecting secure, cloud-native, API-enabled, workflow-enabled, data-centric platforms.
• Experience with AI-enabled enterprise solutions, Large Language Models, prompt engineering, semantic search, vector databases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, model orchestration, AI observability, and responsible AI controls.

Nice to have

• Appian certification or equivalent enterprise Appian engineering and architecture experience.
• Experience with Regulatory Affairs, RIM, submission management, regulatory intelligence, regulatory analytics, content management, knowledge management, or evidence management platforms.
• Experience with Scientific Affairs, Medical Affairs, evidence generation, scientific content workflows, or knowledge search.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure AI services, Azure OpenAI, Copilot extensibility, AI Foundry, or agent frameworks.
• TOGAF, Azure Solutions Architect, Appian, SAFe Architect, SAFe Agilist, or equivalent certification.
