TL;DR
Water Resources Engineer (Hydrotechnical): Designing and assessing river engineering, watercourse crossings, natural channels, and flood mitigation projects across Western Canada with an accent on hydraulics, hydrology, erosion protection, fish habitat, and regulatory approvals. Focus on developing HEC-RAS models, completing field investigations and hydrotechnical assessments, supporting construction, and monitoring post-construction performance.

Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada; work in the Calgary office with field work accounting for approximately 5–30% of the role

Salary: CAD 35.00–60.00 per hour, commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, and professional registration.

What you will do

  • Design and assess river engineering projects, including watercourse crossings, bridges, culverts, pipelines, bank stabilization, erosion protection, flood mitigation, river training, water intakes, and channel remediation.
  • Design and restore natural channels and side channels, including fish habitat enhancement, fish passage, offsetting, and stream restoration.
  • Develop and apply hydraulic and hydrologic models for river engineering, water management, watercourse crossings, and flood hazard assessments.
  • Complete field investigations, site assessments, erosion, scour, geomorphic, flood hazard, and other hydrotechnical assessments.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering designs, specifications, regulatory applications, and permitting materials.
  • Support construction, post-construction monitoring, project delivery, client relationships, and the mentoring of junior team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Resources Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in hydrotechnical or water resources engineering.
  • Strong foundation in hydraulics and hydrology, with an understanding of erosion, scour, flood hazards, and river processes.
  • Experience with HEC-RAS and strong technical writing, analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • P.Eng. registration, or eligibility for registration within approximately one year, in Alberta or another Canadian province.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a satisfactory driving record; field, construction, regulatory, client, contractor, or multidisciplinary project experience.
