Software Modernization Engineer, Lead

Location: Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, USA; remote work is available, with occasional in-person work at a Booz Allen or customer facility possible.

Salary: $86,800–$198,000 annualized USD.

What you will do

• Design enterprise architecture supporting strategic and tactical transformation, governance, growth, optimization, innovation, and modernization initiatives.
• Lead selective re-engineering and refactoring of large codebases and data architectures without changing externally observable behavior.
• Lead troubleshooting of refactored software and oversee performance profiling and documentation.
• Oversee configuration management and CI/CD pipelines, including automated security scans, SAST, DAST testing, and SBOM generation.
• Plan and oversee automated unit, integration, and regression testing for refactored modules.
• Develop complex technical solutions, work independently, and mentor and supervise engineering team members.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience providing hands-on leadership to software modernization or re-engineering teams.
• Experience with C++, Java, and Python.
• Ability to refactor application code and data architecture while preserving established behavior and governance responsibilities.
• Secret clearance required; eligibility for access to classified information is subject to a security investigation.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Ability to collaborate with software engineers, the Lead Software Modernization Architect, US government customers, and legacy software developers.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI-assisted code analysis, dependency analysis, candidate-module identification, and secure manual review.
• Experience with containerized microservices, Kubernetes, and cloud-native deployment.
• Experience with event-driven messaging systems and asynchronous services.
• TS/SCI clearance.
