Principal Software Engineer (SaaS)

Location: Remote within the United States, with occasional in-person office meetings for candidates residing in the San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, or Madison metro areas. Candidates must currently reside in the United States. Visa sponsorship or extensions are not offered.

Salary: $140,000–$195,000 base salary annually, plus potential discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Define and guide the evolution of the enterprise SaaS platform architecture.
• Develop phased modernization strategies that balance future-state architecture with current customer and business commitments.
• Design and develop critical platform capabilities, architectural patterns, and proof-of-concept solutions.
• Lead technical design and code reviews while establishing engineering standards across application, integration, data, and cloud architecture.
• Partner with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to resolve complex technical challenges, mentor engineers, and support successful delivery.

Requirements

• 15+ years of software engineering experience building complex, scalable, and reliable enterprise applications.
• Experience at Principal, Staff, Architect, or equivalent technical leadership level, including defining technical direction across multiple engineering teams.
• Expert-level Java and Spring Boot skills, with working knowledge of Python.
• Deep experience with enterprise architecture, distributed systems, microservices, APIs, integration patterns, and event-driven design.
• Strong experience with AWS, cloud-native applications, CI/CD, containers, Kubernetes or similar platforms, databases, data pipelines, messaging, search, and observability.
• Strong understanding of application security, performance, resiliency, scalability, and production-readiness practices.

Nice to have

• Experience modernizing mature business-critical SaaS platforms while maintaining customer and operational continuity.
• Experience supporting large data volumes, complex workflows, and extensive integrations.
• Experience with Angular or comparable web technologies.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude.
• Knowledge of the energy, utility, energy-efficiency, or clean-energy technology industry.
