Assistant or System Protection and Control Technician (Odessa, FL)

Location: Odessa, Florida, United States. Onsite field work at generation plants, transmission switch yards, control houses, and distribution substations; requires 5–15% travel, overnight stays, call-outs, and availability for work at any time, including weekends, holidays, and emergencies.

What you will do

• Calibrate, install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot protective relays and associated equipment.
• Maintain and repair microprocessor-based and electromechanical relay systems, substation protection systems, and complex control systems.
• Work with station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
• Read and interpret single-line drawings, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.
• Perform switching and tagging to secure equipment for repair, maintenance, and construction.
• Respond to power system emergencies and maintain safe work practices in varied field conditions.

Requirements

• Two-year degree, diploma, or vocational certificate in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a similar electrical field; alternatively, qualifying military electronics experience or journeyman electrician/relay technician experience.
• Pass the applicable technician test and demonstrate knowledge of AC/DC theory, Ohm’s law, single- and three-phase systems, power factor, and power system parameters.
• Read and interpret electrical and electronic schematics and functional diagrams.
• Use multimeters, relay test instruments, oscilloscopes, digital analyzers, computers, and related software.
• Obtain Switching and Tagging Certification within 180 days and complete the Assistant SPAC training program or equivalent where applicable.
• Must be able to work lawfully in the United States without employment-based immigration sponsorship now or in the future. Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 lbs and work in confined spaces and at various heights is required.
