TL;DR
Engineer III, Nuclear Packaging (Mechanical Engineering/Nuclear Safety): Designing and developing mechanical systems, structures, and components for nuclear products and facilities with an accent on nuclear safety, technical requirements, and production readiness. Focus on structural, thermal, hydraulic, containment, and criticality evaluations, nuclear transport packaging under 10 CFR Part 71, and coordinating design, testing, manufacturing, and regulatory documentation.

Location: Rockville, MD; work site at 9801 Washingtonian Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD; 4 days in office. Standard hours are 8:00am–5:00pm ET, Monday–Friday. Travel is up to 10%.

Salary: $122,500–$138,750 per year, base salary.

What you will do

  • Develop mechanical and physical concepts for structures, systems, and components used in nuclear products and facilities, with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Identify and document requirements, interfaces, design bases, criteria, industry codes, and standards with systems engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Perform structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other engineering calculations using hand calculations and analytical tools.
  • Develop reactor component designs, including pressure vessels, piping, reactor internals, nuclear fuel, and high-temperature graphite materials.
  • Coordinate design activities with engineering teams, partners, and suppliers, supporting prototyping, testing, manufacturability, assembly, integration, and commissioning.
  • Prepare design bases, technical reports, calculations, drawings, verification and validation plans, and configuration-controlled engineering deliverables.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically five years of engineering experience; a master’s or Ph.D. may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations and experience designing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience developing and delivering hardware or manufacturing processes in a production environment.
  • Experience or knowledge with CAD and PLM software such as UG/NX, SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer, Teamcenter, or Windchill.
  • Ability to work 4 days per week in the Gaithersburg, Maryland office and maintain standard ET office hours.

Nice to have

  • Experience designing, fabricating, testing, or licensing Type A or Type B fissile radioactive material transport packages under 10 CFR Part 71 and Part 49.
  • Experience with nuclear storage systems under 10 CFR Part 72 or Part 50.
  • Experience reviewing structural, thermal, containment, shielding, and criticality evaluations.
  • Experience with regulatory pre-application meetings and responses to requests for additional information.
