TL;DR
Sr. Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Automation): Evaluating and improving supplier automation capabilities, material handling, and material flow in complex manufacturing environments with an accent on automation maturity, analytics, and cross-functional execution. Focus on developing supplier assessment models, optimizing manufacturing systems, and driving strategic recommendations across supplier and GM teams.

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan, with reporting to the specified location at least three times per week. Regular domestic and international travel to supplier locations is required, at approximately 25–50%.

What you will do

  • Lead complex assessments of supplier automation maturity using GM-defined frameworks and advanced analytics.
  • Develop automation maturity strategies aligned with long-term operational goals.
  • Evaluate and optimize supplier material handling and material flow systems for cost and efficiency.
  • Facilitate supplier workshops and improvement plans to address automation gaps.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, Industrialization, Purchasing Program Management, Product Program Cost Optimization, and direct purchasing teams.
  • Maintain GM’s automation maturity model and supplier evaluation processes while mentoring junior specialists and presenting recommendations to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in engineering, manufacturing, automation, supply chain, purchasing, procurement, logistics, business, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience; internships and co-op experience do not count.
  • Strong understanding of material handling and material flow optimization in complex manufacturing environments.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Advanced analytical skills with tools such as Power BI, Excel, and data modeling.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to supplier locations, typically 25–50%.

Nice to have

  • Experience with automation maturity models, Industry 4.0, or digital manufacturing assessments.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, robotics, PLCs, MES, smart manufacturing systems, WMS, or ERP environments.
  • Project management experience in cross-functional or supplier-facing roles.
  • Experience with purchasing, supplier negotiations, sourcing strategies, or purchasing program management.
  • Experience mentoring technical talent and familiarity with global manufacturing practices.
