Senior Software Engineer II, Search & Matching (Alma)

Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid); office attendance required 2–3 days per week at 44 Montgomery Street. Candidates must be based in the San Francisco metro area or able to relocate independently within 90 days. Occasional travel for team on-sites is required.

Salary: $207,000–$233,000 base salary per year, plus stock options and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and build scalable search and matching capabilities for the Alma product, improving how clients discover and connect with providers.
• Architect, build, and evolve backend services and APIs, contributing across the full stack when needed.
• Lead technical design sessions, architectural reviews, and end-to-end delivery of complex projects.
• Define service boundaries and guide the evolution of capabilities from the existing monolithic application.
• Integrate AI tools into engineering workflows, evaluate new techniques, and establish quality standards for AI-assisted work.
• Mentor engineers, coordinate cross-team efforts, and lead high-stakes investigations and bug responses.

Requirements

• 6–8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Expertise in Python and Django for scalable backend services and APIs, with strong proficiency in React.
• Experience designing and scaling complex full-stack systems, distributed systems, microservices, data flows, and reliable data models.
• Experience designing and optimizing search infrastructure, including indexing, relevance and ranking, query performance, and search quality at scale.
• Experience leading complex multi-team technical projects, influencing stakeholders, and mentoring engineers.
• Strong focus on clean, maintainable architecture, testing, scalability, performance, reliability, and critical evaluation of AI-assisted engineering output.
