Staff Software Engineer - Back End (Java)

Location: Remote within the United States; McLean, VA

Salary: $130,000–$160,000 per year

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services using Java 17+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, REST APIs, and microservices architecture.
• Build REST and SOAP integrations between modernized services and legacy enterprise systems.
• Enhance and sustain the legacy Java platform using technologies including Spring, Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, WebLogic, Hibernate, and Oracle.
• Investigate complex defects, resolve production issues, and optimize SQL queries, data access patterns, and database integrations.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, partners, and stakeholders on technical design, modernization strategy, roadmaps, and delivery.
• Contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, deployments, code reviews, technical documentation, mentoring, interviews, and occasional client travel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, plus 10+ years of professional software development experience; equivalent professional experience may substitute.
• 8+ years of hands-on Java development and 5+ years with Spring Framework and/or Spring Boot.
• 5+ years developing REST APIs and web services in a microservices architecture.
• 5+ years working with Oracle or another relational database, including production enterprise applications.
• Experience with Agile/Scrum environments, Git-based source control, troubleshooting, and analytical problem-solving.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for working with distributed teammates, partners, and stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Kafka, Redis, resilient integration patterns, Docker, Kubernetes, JUnit, and Mockito.
• Experience modernizing monoliths into microservices while legacy and modernized architectures operate concurrently.
• Familiarity with FedRAMP, FISMA, HIPAA, or similarly regulated environments.
