System Protection Engineer (Electrical Engineering)

Location: Hybrid role based in San Ramon, California, with the assigned work location within the PG&E Service Territory

What you will do

• Execute routine system protection engineering duties with limited assistance.
• Provide technical protection engineering for projects, maintenance, and operations support.
• Issue protection requirements, calculate relay and automatics settings, process clearances, and investigate relay operations.
• Perform protection engineering for transmission voltages up to 230 kV and for distribution systems.
• Handle complex protection projects, including special protection schemes, fast distribution bus pickup, tie cable, Switchgear IPAC, and MPAC work.
• Contribute to design standards, engineering tools, and new relay schemes while guiding peers and lower-level engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited US curriculum, or an equivalent degree from outside the US.
• At least 3 years of cumulative experience in system protection.
• Ability to calculate relay settings for station automatics, transmission line relaying, transformer bank, bus, generator, and breaker failure protection schemes.
• Knowledge of fault analysis programs, symmetrical component theory, fault calculations, logic gates, control circuitry, protection equipment, instrumentation, and testing procedures.
• Ability to analyze relay operations and determine fault locations.
• Ability to interpret applicable codes, industry standards, and regulations and educate others.

Nice to have

• Current and active California PE license.
