TL;DR
Staff HITL Engineer (Spacecraft Test Systems): Building an integrated hardware-in-the-loop test capability for a Mars science orbiter, spanning rack hardware, software automation, data acquisition, and spacecraft-level validation with an accent on automated testing, CI/regression infrastructure, and hardware-software integration. Focus on designing an always-on validation system, debugging timing-sensitive failures across avionics and flight software, and leading final integration and test before launch.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States

Salary: $164,000–$246,000 USD per year

Company

hirify.global develops launch vehicles and is building the Terran R rocket and a philanthropically funded Mars science orbiter.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and maintain the integrated hardware-in-the-loop test environment, including racks, avionics, breakout hardware, load emulation, harnesses, and test equipment.
  • Build simulation, data-acquisition, and control infrastructure for exercising flight software with real and representative spacecraft hardware.
  • Develop automated test frameworks and CI/regression pipelines with continuous execution, pass/fail adjudication, regression detection, and failure reporting.
  • Debug failures across flight software, avionics, interfaces, harnessing, timing, communications, and test infrastructure through root-cause analysis.
  • Validate timing-sensitive interfaces, telemetry, system health, test coverage, anomalies, and requirements traceability, including long-duration testing.
  • Lead final flight-hardware integration and testing before launch in coordination with subsystem engineers.

Requirements

  • Degree in computer, electrical, aerospace, or related engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 7+ years of test engineering experience, including automated test frameworks for integrated hardware, firmware, and software systems.
  • Strong current software skills for test automation, tooling, and validation pipelines.
  • Experience building test automation and CI/regression infrastructure with telemetry, logging, automated pass/fail results, and continuous testing.
  • Hands-on hardware and embedded-systems experience, including bench troubleshooting with standard electronics equipment.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet, UART, and SPI, plus the ability to own complex test capabilities and coordinate root-cause investigations across engineering teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience building HITL, SIL/HIL, laboratory automation, or integrated test platforms from scratch.
  • Experience with spacecraft, launch vehicles, satellites, robotics, autonomous systems, aircraft, vehicles, medical devices, or other high-reliability hardware.
  • Hands-on experience with harnessing, cable fabrication, breakout boards, rack wiring, or test-equipment setup.
  • Experience establishing test practices, tools, or team processes in a fast-moving engineering environment.

Culture & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • Generous paid time off and sick leave.
  • Parental leave.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Work focused on autonomy, ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and technical rigor.
