Principal Software Architect (MedTech)

Location: Carlsbad, California, United States

Annual base salary: $210,000–$230,000

What you will do

• Define and drive the technical vision and roadmap for the platform.
• Design scalable, maintainable architectures for complex distributed systems and high-scale applications.
• Establish technical standards, best practices, API standards, integration patterns, and technical governance.
• Lead architectural reviews, make organization-wide technology decisions, and identify and mitigate technical risks.
• Guide implementation of Node.js microservices, GraphQL federation and gateway patterns, React applications, component libraries, and PostgreSQL solutions.
• Lead proof-of-concept initiatives and technical spikes, collaborate with senior leadership, and mentor senior engineers and technical leads.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 10–15 years of experience building software systems, including 5+ years leading development teams.
• Deep expertise in the Node.js ecosystem and distributed systems.
• Advanced knowledge of GraphQL, including federation and gateway patterns.
• Expert-level understanding of React architecture and performance optimization.
• Extensive PostgreSQL experience at scale, including sharding and replication.
• Proven experience leading large-scale technical initiatives, with a strong understanding of system design, scalability, performance, and high-traffic distributed systems.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, technical communication, and documentation skills; ability to deliver high-quality work with speed and willingness to wear multiple hats when needed.
• Track record of mentoring senior engineers and technical leads.

Nice to have

• Experience with spine or orthopedics.
• Experience with Prisma in large-scale applications.
• Knowledge of modern application frameworks such as Remix.
• iOS architecture experience for enterprise applications.
• Experience with multiple cloud platforms, including AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Background in API gateway and service mesh technologies.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and message queuing.
• Knowledge of security best practices and compliance requirements.
