Structural Steel Bridge Inspector

Location: Full-time, long-term, on-site position in the greater Savannah, Georgia region, United States

Salary: $120,000–$160,000 per year ($58–$77 per hour)

What you will do

• Inspect structural steel erection, including fit-up, alignment, camber, connections, erection sequencing, and compliance with approved plans.
• Verify delivered steel, connection materials, traceability, mill test reports, shop drawings, and shipping or handling damage.
• Review and monitor welding procedures, welder qualifications, field-welded connections, high-strength bolting, and fracture-critical work.
• Coordinate and witness nondestructive testing, including ultrasonic, magnetic particle, penetrant, and visual examinations.
• Inspect bearings, expansion joints, cable and post-tensioning components, coatings, corrosion protection, and surface preparation.
• Document deficiencies, coordinate corrective actions, maintain inspection records, and report quality and schedule status to construction management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 7+ years of progressive transportation technician experience with a state highway agency or consultant, including construction experience on at least five complex bridges.
• Experience with structural steel bridge erection, field welding, high-strength bolted connections, stay cable bridge construction or cable replacement, and inspection documentation.
• Working knowledge of AWS D1.5, AWS D1.1, AASHTO, AISC, or comparable state DOT structural steel requirements.
• Proficiency with digital inspection and reporting platforms such as Procore or Bluebeam Revu, and with Microsoft Office 365.
• Required certifications include GDOT WECS, GDOT Field Concrete Technician, GSWCC Level 1a, WTS/WTCS for Traffic Control, CWI or SCWI, and PTI/PCI.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or construction management.
• OSHA 30-hour certification.
• Experience as an owner’s lead steel inspector on bridge packages exceeding $100 million.
• Experience with fracture-critical steel members, fracture control plans, and construction management software such as ProjectWise, Kahua, or e-Builder.
