TL;DR
Directed Energy Technician (UAS): Assemble, modify, test, and maintain UAS target platforms and directed-energy test instrumentation for high-energy laser and high-power microwave live-fire testing with an accent on electrical integration, diagnostics, calibration, and field operations. Focus on piloting UAS during weapon tests, isolating hardware and software faults, validating test data, and documenting incidents and results.

Location: Huntsville, Alabama, United States; work is performed in laboratory, field, office, and outdoor environments, with approximately 25% travel for extended assignments.

What you will do

  • Assemble, modify, maintain, and operate Group 1–3 UAS platforms as dynamic targets for high-energy laser and high-power microwave live-fire tests.
  • Integrate thermal sensors, laser power meters, telemetry equipment, tracking aids, diagnostic optics, and beam-profiling instrumentation.
  • Deploy, align, calibrate, operate, and maintain directed-energy test equipment, power-management systems, and cooling units.
  • Perform pre-flight inspections, post-flight maintenance, troubleshooting, fault isolation, and quality inspections of mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
  • Serve as remote pilot in command for UAS target flights and connect directed-energy prototypes to FAAD C2 networks for tracking verification.
  • Collaborate with engineers during live-fire test events, validate test data, prepare Test Incident Reports, and produce detailed test documentation.

Requirements

  • US citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on technical maintenance or field-service experience.
  • High school diploma; an associate degree or technical trade certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in soldering, crimping, splicing, cable fabrication, and control-panel building.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, work with industrial chemicals and adhesives, lift up to 35 pounds, and work for extended periods standing, walking, bending, reaching, or on elevated surfaces.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, independence, multitasking ability, and adaptability to changing customer requirements.

Nice to have

  • Formal certified cable-assembly training and experience populating and soldering circuit boards.
  • Welding experience and specialization in avionics.
  • Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Quality inspection experience and familiarity with military test ranges or directed-energy and kinetic-weapon testing.
  • Experience with Cisco, Ubiquiti, or Netgear networks.
