TL;DR
Senior Counsel-Regulatory (Utilities) (Regulated utility legal affairs): Advising NiSource and its operating companies on complex regulatory matters before state and federal commissions with an accent on regulatory strategy, litigation, and pragmatic business counsel. Focus on managing proceedings, negotiating legal disputes, supervising outside counsel, and applying state and federal law to high-impact utility matters.

Location: Hybrid, with three days per week in the office. The role can be based in Washington, DC, Harrisburg, PA, or Canonsburg, PA, with a preference for Washington, DC. Regular travel to Baltimore, MD, and occasional travel to Richmond, VA, Harrisburg, PA, and Washington, DC, is required.

Salary: $160,100–$240,100 per year

What you will do

  • Provide proactive legal advice on complex regulatory and business matters.
  • Manage proceedings before Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania utility commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • Handle legal issues independently, review legal documents, and negotiate contracts and disputes.
  • Retain and supervise outside counsel on selected matters.
  • Advise and train internal clients and communicate matter status and recommendations.
  • Support emergency response efforts when required, including work outside normal hours during storm season.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • At least five years of legal regulatory experience and significant subject-matter expertise.
  • Independent case-handling experience, litigation skills, and knowledge of state and federal laws and agencies.
  • Strong legal analysis, judgment, negotiation, communication, counseling, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state and in good standing with the applicable state bar; Maryland and/or Virginia bar licenses are preferred.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require employer sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice to have

  • Experience in the utility industry or another regulated industry.
  • Experience working at a law firm or publicly traded corporation.
