Staff Manufacturing Engineer (CMC Applications)

Location: Redondo Beach, United States; workplace type: onsite. Applicants must be U.S. Persons or eligible to obtain an export license under ITAR/EAR regulations.

Salary: $175,000–$215,000 per year

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end manufacturing process for C/SiC and related ceramic composite hardware, from preform architecture through densification, machining, and coating.
• Develop and qualify CVI, PIP, brazing, furnace, tooling, fixturing, and joining processes with repeatable production cycles.
• Define inspection, acceptance, validation, NDI, coupon testing, allowable development, and first-article inspection approaches.
• Build the materials supply chain by qualifying vendors, dual-sourcing critical materials, and reducing precursor supply risks.
• Partner with propulsion, structures, materials, thermal, quality, technicians, and machinists to improve producibility and manufacture flight hardware.
• Scale CMC manufacturing from prototype to rate production while managing equipment, facility layout, cycle time, yield, cost, qualification milestones, and technical roadmaps.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience with high-temperature materials or advanced composites; equivalent pathways include a master’s degree with 3+ years or a relevant PhD with 1+ year of hands-on experience.
• Experience in aerospace, defense, hypersonics, gas turbine, nuclear, energy, industrial ceramics, or comparable fields.
• Experience with CMC manufacturing, ceramic composite NDI, high-temperature furnace operations, process qualification, and production scale-up.
• Working knowledge of aerospace quality systems such as AS9100, along with RCA, structured problem-solving, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or statistical process control.
• Must be a U.S. Person or eligible to obtain an applicable U.S. export license.

Nice to have

• Rocket engine propulsion fundamentals and hot-section hardware experience, including nozzles, throats, combustion chambers, and thermal protection systems.
• Fiber preform architecture experience, including braiding, filament winding, 2D/3D weaving, or additive preforming.
• Finite element analysis of anisotropic and high-temperature materials.
• Experience transitioning new processes from laboratory or prototype scale into qualified-rate production.
