Controls Engineer (Automation) (PLCs/Robotics): Supporting and maintaining automated manufacturing systems in a 24/7 production operation with an accent on fault diagnosis, system optimisation, and equipment availability. Focus on troubleshooting PLCs, robotic systems, SCADA, HMIs, and industrial control systems while contributing to automation upgrades and continuous improvement.

Location: Castlebar, Mayo, Ireland; onsite, shift-based role supporting a 24/7 manufacturing operation.

What you will do

  • Provide technical support for automated manufacturing equipment to minimise downtime and maintain optimal performance.
  • Perform fault finding, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis across control systems.
  • Support and maintain PLCs, robotic systems and controllers, PC-based control systems, and automated instrumentation.
  • Maintain Floor IT systems, including industrial PCs and HMIs, as well as serialisation and track & trace systems.
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians and engineering teams to resolve equipment issues.
  • Support automation projects, upgrades, documentation, standardisation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Degree or higher qualification in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, control systems engineering, or a related discipline; alternatively, trade qualification as an electrician, instrumentation technician, or mechatronics technician with relevant automation experience.
  • 2–3 years of experience in a similar automation, controls, or manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience with PLCs, robotics, SCADA, and industrial control systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Flexibility to work shift patterns and provide backup cover for a 24/7 manufacturing operation is essential.
  • Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, plan and execute project work, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
